How to Measure for a Steering Wheel Cover

by GFSISARTY Team 20 Aug 2026

A steering wheel cover should fit snugly and remain stable while you turn. Style matters, but size and installation come first. A cover that is too large can rotate independently from the wheel, while one that is too small may be difficult to install or place unnecessary stress on its seams.

What you need to measure

Use a flexible tape measure if possible. Keep the vehicle parked, turn it off, and center the wheel before measuring.

1. Outside diameter

Measure straight across the center of the steering wheel from the outer edge on one side to the outer edge on the other. Do not follow the curve. Many passenger vehicles use a wheel near the 14.5–15 inch range, but you should measure your own wheel rather than relying on the vehicle category.

2. Grip circumference

Wrap the tape around the thickest part of the rim—the section your hand holds. This measurement helps distinguish between a standard and unusually thick wheel. If a listing provides only diameter, compare the product’s stated fit notes with your vehicle and contact the seller when uncertain.

Check features that can affect fit

  • Factory heating elements or warnings about approved covers
  • Flat-bottom or non-circular wheel shapes
  • Unusually thick grips, thumb rests, or molded contours
  • Paddle shifters and controls close to the rim
  • An existing cover, which should normally be removed before measuring

Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions, especially for heated or specialty steering wheels.

How to install a snug cover

  1. Let the cover reach room temperature; cold material can be less flexible.
  2. Align the top center of the cover with the top of the steering wheel.
  3. Pull the cover down evenly on both sides instead of stretching one area at a time.
  4. Work the final section over the bottom of the wheel using steady hand pressure.
  5. Smooth the cover and check that seams and decorative elements sit evenly.

Do not use sharp tools, lubricants, or improvised fasteners. They can damage the cover or wheel and may create a safety risk.

Perform a fit test before driving

Grip the installed cover firmly at several positions and try to rotate it while holding the wheel still. It should not slip, bunch, or lift away from the rim. Turn the wheel through its normal range while parked and confirm that the cover does not touch stalks, paddles, or controls.

If the cover moves independently, remove it and choose another size. Adhesive tape is not a substitute for correct fit.

Choose a finish that suits daily use

Texture affects cleaning and feel. Smooth surfaces are generally quick to wipe, while embroidered, fluffy, or crochet-look finishes need gentler care. Consider climate, hand comfort, and cleaning frequency alongside color.

Once you have both measurements, explore our steering wheel cover collection. For a balanced interior, add only one or two complementary pieces from cute car accessories rather than crowding the driver’s area.

Steering Wheel Covers to Compare

After checking your measurements, compare the ice silk daisy steering wheel cover, fleece and ice silk daisy cover, and flower embroidery steering wheel cover. Review each product page for its stated fit range before ordering.
